Brief background: Kujaku starts out as a mysterious, seemingly all-knowing trickster, and that is how he remains until the very end of the manga, when his true identity is finally revealed. Before that, he makes irregular and unexpected appearances, during which he acts as a source of information, help, and general annoyance to the travelling group of rebels set out to overthrow the cruel God King. Even though most people meeting him are vary of his reasons and believes him to be of the evil mazoku race, Yasha and the others soon find themselves forced to recognise him as a valuable (albeit suspicious) ally in their quest. It soon becomes evident that Kujaku's powers exceed those of demons and, to an extent, even those of gods. Not only does he know about the prophecy around which the story centers - he is also able to enter magically guarded places and overhear conversations without anyone's knowledge, as well as perform spells only those of the holy stargazers' lineage should normally manage. This is in spite of the fact that he, unbeknownst to most, harbours the mark of the Sinners, which manifests itself as an eye located in the forehead of those having committed 'the gravest of sins'. His powers as well as third eye, we eventually learn, are due to the fact that he is the offspring of a secret relationship between the former God King and his sister Sonsei, who was a stargazer. His father, in an attempt to hide his crime, locked both mother and child up in a dungeon cell, never to be released. His mother eventually lost her mind, and telling her son that she wished he had never been born, tried to kill him along with herself. Kujaku escaped, however, and thus we learn his true motive for helping the Six Stars: in his own words, he wishes to see destiny leave its path and to see that there truly is no such thing as an unwanted child. All his actions have been in attempt to create a bond between Ashura and Yasha strong enough to defy even fate (it was he who once gave Yamatou, the sword magically linked to the Ashuras' heirloom Shuratou, to the Yasha clan, as means to stop the god of destruction, should the attempts to keep his seal from breaking be in vain), and in the process of doing so he becomes truly fond of Ashura, not only because of their similiar fates, but also because Ashura is the only one who fully trusts him. When all is said and done and Ashura sleeps without hope of ever waking and Yasha faithfully waits by his side for what appears to be centuries, Kujaku eventually takes pity on the two, and sacrifices himself so that Ashura may wake up. Personality: Kujaku is the kind of person to reveal personal information only when it suits his purposes (or whims, as the case might be). He never attempts to hide the fact that he is far more powerful and knowledgeable than he should rightfully be, but as soon as anyone questions him about his identity, he will insist that he is nothing more than "a simple traveller", despite obvious proof that this is not the case. He acts carefree and silly, loves to tease both Yasha and Ashura, even though he is also manipulating and has shown himself adverse neither to witnessing slaughter nor to killing. When it comes down to it, however, he is both kind and considerate, even if he generally prefers to keep to the sidelines and observe rather than play an active part in the events surrounding him. | ||||||||||
